Intern Therapist - Internship Opportunity
About the Internship (September 2025 - April 2026 Term):
Our internship program welcomes interns who are completing their clinical requirements for a Master’s degree in Counselling, Clinical Social Work, Psychology, or a related field. We are currently offering ten (10) vacancies for intern therapists who will play a critical role in serving vulnerable clients and supporting a wide range of clients by providing individual, couple, family, and group therapy counselling services. Services are offered to meet the needs of clients and within parameters set by the agency.
Interns take part in providing counselling services in our Drop-In Single-Session Counselling (DISSC) program (at The Family Centre and at partner sites) and subsidized ongoing therapy to clients presenting with a wide variety of presenting concerns. There may also be opportunities to support in schools, helping to reduce the cost of therapy for clients. This internship experience is designed to provide comprehensive training and support for interns as they complete their clinical requirements.
What you will be doing:
- Work with adults, couples, families, and minors to support their healing and meet therapeutic goals
- Use sound techniques to establish and recognize a trusting relationship with client(s)
- Use a solid theoretical base in providing service to clients
- Assist clients in connecting with community resources as needed
- Advocate on behalf of clients who are unable to do so themselves and support clients in learning how to advocate on their own behalf
- Complete administrative responsibilities accurately and on time
- Videotape client sessions for clinical supervision
- Attend individual supervision, group supervision, and consultation supervision meetings as required
- Provide sufficient availability and flexibility to support the agency and meet the required hours for the academic program
What you will bring to the role:
- In process of completing a Master’s Degree in Counselling, Clinical Social Work, Psychology, or related field
- Experience in face-to-face work with vulnerable adults, children and/or families is an asset
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English
- Flexible, driven and creative attitude
- Strong attention to detail, time management and self-care practices
- Strong computer literacy (Microsoft, Google Drive, online databases, etc.)
Background Check Process & Requirements:
As part of the selection process, The Family Centre will conduct reference checks with your most recent employers. Additionally, the following requirements must be met:
- Police Information Check - Vulnerable Sector (completed within the last 6 months of the start date)
- Child Intervention Records Check (completed within the last 6 months of the start date)
- ASIST Suicide Intervention Training or another recognized suicide intervention program, required within 2 months of start date
- Trans Wellness Initiative Introduction to Affirming Spaces Training, completed prior to start of internship
Duration of Internship:
Interviews for the September 2025 - April 2026 Cohort will begin in March 2026 and orientation and shadowing will begin in August 2026. The internship is scheduled to last between eight (8) to ten (10) consecutive months, with a commitment of 20+ hours per week.
